You can kinda get it working but it is very sensitive to changes and make it not worth doing. I DO wish that it was easier to assign control surfaces to the sends on tracks so I could give each band member a cheap USB controller to adjust their own headphone mix. I cannot express how much I like Reaper for it's flexibility for all of this.Īs a band our preferred method of working is to all wear headphones and the only instrument in the room is drums which gives us great isolation for recording. This setup is perfect for just nooding around on an instrument, jamming, composing, band practice, tracking all the way through to mixing or just dorking around. rpp project files so I can find every time we have ever played a certain song.

I have Windows configured to index all Reaper. I use markers and regions to label individual takes. Since disk space it cheap we recorded darned near everything usually in a single project for the entire session. Depending on what I am doing I mute whichever outputs I am not using. The master output goes to the reference monitors. There are also four tracks for headphone mixes and one for the PA. I will sometimes hide tracks I am not using but I often just leave them be and don't record enable them if I'm not using them.

I also have several track templates for keyboards that I load in as desired and each of these has a VSTi plugin with a certain patch assigned to it. When I want to play a different guitar sound I simply record enable the track for the sound I want. Each of the DI guitar tracks has a different Guitar Rig patch assigned to it. The DI guitar and DI bass go into Guitar Rig 5. There are also tracks for DI bass, modeled bass (DI from a Fender Bronco 40 modelling amp), Mic's guitar amp (currently unused) and several for DI guitar. The template contains a folder containing tracks for kick, snare and overheads. I have created a project template that loads automatically when I launch reaper. My (our) workflow is a work in progress right now but it currently revolves entirely around Reaper. Many thanks in advance and much love to those who help me in my journey to become better at my passion of writing and recording music. There's always opportunity to learn, or to refine the process(es) I've used over the years. I have PT, Acid Pro, MixBus, CuBase LE, and a handful of others, but I've made the transition to Reaper 100%, so I'd really like to hear from those who work 90% or more in Reaper. If you use Reaper from beginning to end, even better. From beginning to end, where do you start, and the steps you go through to begin writing, recording, mixing, mastering, and publishing, each step of the way. That said, I'd be interested in hearing how some of you work, and how you create.

I also know there is no "perfect" method as everyone works differently. Every step of the way has been self taught, or by watching a video here or there, so I know I've picked up some bad habits along the way. I've been doing home recording since about 1999. If there is already a post that focuses on this topic I'd be happy with just a link (if you have it handy?). I tried searching for similar posts in case someone already posted this question, but thousands of results was a bit daunting, and none of them contained the specific phrase "describe your workflow".
